Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's initial efforts at popular stardom failed with two separate record labels signing the singer and then pulling her out before she had any new material released. However, in 2007, Capitol Records put out Perry's EP Ur So Gay which attracted modest attention for its cheerfully playful title track. I Kissed a Girl, a confident love song to her sexual desire that is set to a hard-edged electronic pop beat, gained a larger sensation later. The song was controversial because critics condemned the song for encouraging relationships between gay men and other charged that it depicted a sexually explicit scene which appealed to men's fantasies concerning female sexuality. I Kissed a Girl became a worldwide number-one hit due to the combination of titillation with a polished song melody. It was also instrumental in driving sales for her 2008 album of the same name, one of the Boys. With its bouncy sharp-tongued second song Hot N Cold also proving well-loved, the album the songs Perry wrote herself eventually registered sales of more than three million copies within the United States.
